Want your A/C to blow colder without blowing all your cash? With the hot Texas summer in full swing, this is a valid desire. Fortunately, a cooler interior is possible without an emptier wallet. Just use these tips on how to make A/C colder.

  • Spray down the outdoor compressor unit: Switch off the power to the A/C and spray it down with a garden hose. This task takes about two minutes and removes buildup between the fins to increase airflow and improve efficiency.
  • Change the filter monthly: The next time you have routine maintenance performed, ask a technician where the air filter is and have him show you how to replace it. Plan to complete this task once a month to help maintain adequate airflow. This is especially important for if you have pets whose hair enters the HVAC system and clogs the filter.
  • Seal windows and doors: Air leaks are huge energy wasters. They allow hot air to enter and undermine your air conditioner’s cooling efforts. Seal gaps and cracks around windows and doors yourself using caulk and weatherstripping in the appropriate locations.
  • Don’t crank the temperature way down: The faulty logic here suggests that the air will blow cooler if you push the A/C to the max by cranking the thermostat down to 60 degrees. However, this can backfire since the constant operation can cause the air conditioner to freeze up and blow out warm air. If you’re uncomfortable, change into something cooler and lower the thermostat one degree.
  • Turn on the fan: Ceiling fan, box fan, pedestal fan – it doesn’t make a difference. Moving the air around you lets you enjoy a cooling effect with significantly less energy consumption than running the air conditioner. Use this to your advantage by setting the thermostat to 78 degrees while feeling up to four degrees cooler thanks to the windchill effect created by the fan.
