Home improvement experts agree: When you’re deciding on a toilet, you shouldn’t think about style and price only. Consider features and function, too. Taking the time to research your options before you choose a toilet will ensure that it’s capable of handling more than just the basics. Here are eight tips to help you choose the toilet that’s right for your home:

  • Savings: Toilets with the WaterSense label can save up to 4,000 gallons of water per person/per year. This means significant savings on your water bill, and many utility companies now offer rebates to customers installing water-saving toilets.  Conserving water and money? Smart.
  • Size and fit: Be sure you have the correct measurements of the roughed-in space, and check the shape, diameter and height before you make the purchase. Will the toilet support mobility-challenged family members and guests?
  • Cleaning: Pressure-assist flushing mechanisms release water at a velocity that’s greater than the velocity of traditional toilets. This helps to keep toilet bowls clean. This feature, however, comes at a higher price.
  • Noise: Pressure-assist toilets are great, but are often extremely noisy; try to install them in areas where noise isn’t an issue.
  • Maintenance: When you’re looking at a newfangled model, keep in mind that custom parts mean custom replacement, which can make repairs problematic and expensive.
  • Comfort: A padded or heated seat can be a nice feature.
  • Style and design: Standard white is a classic: Avoid colored fixtures that will make reselling your home difficult in the future.
  • Price: It isn’t necessary to buy the Rolls Royce of toilets, but try to avoid the cheapest. You use your toilet many times a day. A quality toilet can cost $100-$500. Higher-end models can run in the $500-$600 range.

A conversation about toilets may not be suitable cocktail party subject,  but when planning a bathroom remodel, that’s the time for serious discussion about commodes.
