Energy savings are hard to come by during the hot summer months. After all, you have to crank up your A/C to stay cool. But there are actually a number of ways to save energy and money even in summer. Here are some tips to help you get your summertime energy savings.
Best Practices for Summertime Energy Savings
- Repair or replace your current A/C unit. The choice of repairing or replacing an A/C is a big one. A new system is a costly endeavor, but purchasing a more energy efficient unit will save you money for years to come. If you are not ready to replace your AC yet, an annual check-up can help your current system run better. Hire a technician to get a professional opinion.
- Install a programmable or WiFi thermostat. The installation of a programable thermostat will allow you to set the exact running days and times for your A/C to avoid wasting energy when no one is home. If you want to take it one step further, pick up a WiFi model. These thermostats can be accessed through an Internet connection or a smart phone app.
- Invest in a zoning system. By splitting your home into a series of zones, you’ll use much less energy because you will be able to cool only selected areas of your home instead of the entire house.
- Replace your air filter. Once the filter gets clogged up, the efficiency of your A/C system dramatically decreases. Change it every 1-3 months as needed.
- Raise the temperature. For optimal savings, your thermostat should be set to 78 degrees when someone is home. When everyone is gone, 85 is a good temperature.
- Seal air leaks. Every house has air leaks, but the more you have, the harder your A/C will need to work. By sealing any leaks on your air ducts, doors and windows you’ll cut down on wasted energy.
