An important part of A/C installation is sizing the air conditioner to fit your home’s needs. There are numerous aspects of your home that have a significant effect on its cooling needs. In order to make sure they’re all factored in, your contractor uses Manual J and Manual D when sizing and designing your HVAC system.
Manual J
Written and published by the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA), Manual J provides an accurate method of calculating the cooling needs of a home. It takes into account how all the aspects of your home affect its cooling load, including home layout, number and size of windows, and the amount of shade on your lot. It can be rather complicated, so most contractors use a computer program to help them with the calculations. It’s important that your contractor takes care to accurately determine all the specifications that go into the calculations. He or she should especially keep in mind that there’s a bit of overestimation built into the calculations to ensure that homeowners don’t end up with an undersized air conditioner. Therefore, overestimation on the contractor’s part isn’t necessary.
The ideally-sized air conditioner is one that’s just large enough to match the cooling load determined from Manual J. An air conditioner that’s too large would only run for short periods before your home was at the desired temperature. This is less efficient and can cause comfort issues due to the inferior circulation and humidity removal that it provides.
Manual D
While an air conditioner is sized based on the needs of the whole house, the results of Manual J also show the cooling loads of individual rooms. Proper distribution of the air is the responsibility of the ductwork, so these results should be used with Manual D to determine the size of the ducts that are necessary to deliver the proper amount of cooling. Improperly sized ducts can have problems with fast, noisy air velocities or slow, ineffective airflow.
