Tankless water heaters, sometimes called point-of-use water heaters, are appliances that produce hot water only when called for. Unlike conventional units that keep heated water in a tank that typically holds 40 to 80 gallons, a tanklessunit heats water quickly on demand. Although the initial cost of a tankless system can be higher than a conventional system, a tankless unit consumes less energy because you pay to heat only what you use. Reduced energy consumption means lower utility bills. In addition, a well maintained tankless system can have a life span that’s twice as long as a conventional storage water heater.
Basically, there are two types of tankless units:
- Point-of-use water heaters are small enough to fit in tight spaces, typically under the kitchen sink or other areas in the home where hot water is needed. Incorporating several point-of-use units can reduce water heating costs significantly.
- Whole house units are capable of simultaneously meeting hot water requirements at several locations, such as your dishwasher and shower.
Sizing is based on the flow rate that’s required and the temperature rise that’s needed. The flow rate is the amount of water that’s needed at any one time, and the temperature rise is the difference between the temperature of the water coming into the home and the temperature of the water flowing from the faucet. If the temperature of water coming into your home is 60 degrees, and you want water that’s 120 degrees at the faucet, the rise would be 60 degrees.
Installation costs can vary and are largely dependent on location, venting requirements and plumbing connections. Plumbing lines may need to be altered. In addition, tankless heaters have powerful burners that sometimes require a larger gas line. Some homeowners are able to have their units installed outside, which eliminates venting requirements and helps to keep the initial outlay in line.
