Some basic home repair skills come in handy for saving time, energy and money. Extend your skills to include common AC problems, and you can feel more confident to troubleshoot AC issues that always seem to happen when the mercury is high.

AC Power

If you cannot get the air conditioner to power on, take the following steps:

  • Make sure (one more time) that the thermostat is in COOL mode, and the temperature setting is below the temperature reading.
  • Check for a tripped breaker at the circuit panel.
  • Check the limit switch located by the indoor air-handling unit. The limit switch looks like a standard wall light switch. Make sure it’s on.

Inadequate or Uneven Cooling

Another common air conditioner problem is inadequate cooling, which may be uneven temperatures in the home or, perhaps, the AC cycles for very long periods but does not keep the home quite cool enough. Here’s what to do:

  • It may be that the AC cannot keep up with heat gain from the sun. Reduce the AC cooling load by keeping windows, doors and curtains closed.
  • Take a look at the air ducts. You are looking for loose ducts, crinkled ducts and fallen ducts, as well as obvious gaps and holes. Seal loose connections with metal tape or mastic sealant.
  • Check the air filter. A clogged air filter can substantially restrict airflow through the air ducts.

Quick Cycling

Quick cycling is when the AC powers on and off too frequently. This issue is often a side effect of poor HVAC design, “false” thermostat readings, and/or a dirty AC system. Here’s what to do:

  • Make sure the thermostat is not affected by direct sunlight, air vents or heat from other appliances.
  • Clean the indoor evaporator coil with a soft cloth. Spray the outside cabinet with a  water hose to help clean away debris.
  • Has your AC been serviced recently? Schedule professional preventive maintenance to keep your home comfortable and AC operating efficiently all summer long.
