Are you losing sleep because of banging sounds coming from your walls? While it may sound like a bunch of wee people are constructing a new city within your walls, it’s likely that a simple plumbing issue is the cause. Though it’s safe to say that all plumbing and heating systems make noise, these noises shouldn’t be so loud that they keep you up at night.
Noise-Causing Problems
There are many reasons why plumbing pipes can cause excessive noises. Here are the five most common reasons noisy pipes exist:
- Water pressure – Also known as water hammer, pressure builds up and causes expansion in the pipes. This is the most common reason pipes move and make racket.
- Old or loose pipes – Older pipes may have broken pipe clips, and new pipes could be too loose. Either way, loose pipes will bang against interior wall surfaces when the water pressure builds up in your pipes.
- Over-expansion of pipes – This is caused when heated water forces pipes to over-expand. If water is too hot, the expansion will cause loud gurgling sounds.
- Broken or loose fill valves – If the fill valve inside the water tank of a toilet is too loose or broken, it will make the water pressure inside pipes become higher or lower than normal.
- Faulty faucets – When a sink or tub faucet becomes worn out, or when new faucets have loose parts inside, the water pressure will diminish and a loud clanking sound will be heard when the faucet is turned on.
