A ductless mini split is a relatively recent addition to heating and cooling systems in the U.S., and they’re one that will work well in our climate. These systems provide energy efficient conditioning in spaces where ductwork would be expensive or difficult to install. They’re an excellent solution for room additions or areas where ductwork problems force a conditioning alternative.
A mini split is a heat pump that moves heat out in the summer and in during the winter. Their advantages include easy installation, versatility and remarkable efficiency. Using them for heating in our climate is entirely possible, especially if you follow these tips:
- Work with the installing HVAC contractor on selecting the HSPF (heating season performance factor) that will provide sufficient heat for our coldest temperatures. A scroll compressor instead of the standard piston unit will make it possible to warm your space comfortably when the temperature falls below freezing and it raises the HSPF rating of the mini split.
- Lower the heating load of the space where you’ll use the mini split by doing the following : Improving insulation levels, sealing air leaks and installing high efficiency windows or covering existing windows with heavy drapes or clear window sealing kits that keep more heat inside and lower the heating load.
- Place the indoor air handler for the ductless mini split on the floor. Heat rises and it will warm the air as it goes up.
- Clear away any snow on the ground near the condenser and consider building a cover at least 24 inches above it. Snow falling on it reduces its efficiency. Be certain the cover doesn’t impede the airflow through the condenser. Although snow seldom lasts long in our region, you’ll get more heat if it’s cleared away from the condenser.
- Keep the air filter clean to improve its efficiency. Dirt will slow the air coming from the air handler and make the mini split run longer.
