Air Conditioning Repair

In areas that have high heat and humidity, air conditioning is a necessity, especially for the elderly and young children. A professionally installed HVAC system can help keep a home cool and comfortable on the hottest days of summer when the outdoor temperature is extreme. Modern air conditioners use far less energy than earlier models produced less than a decade ago. A new 16 SEER air conditioner can save up to 37 percent on monthly utility costs when compared to a 10 SEER unit installed in the early 2000s.

It Starts with Proper Design

The AC installation process always begins in the system design phase. Quality HVAC contractors run a complete set of ACCA Manual J load calculations for every room in the building prior to selecting the equipment. These complex formulas identify the total energy consumption footprint of the structure. The factors that affect the load include insulation R-values, windows, doors, building orientation, perimeter tightness and local weather patterns.

Contractors that use discredited equipment sizing methods should be avoided. Oversized equipment will frequently short cycle, which can increase operating costs and degrade indoor comfort. Homes with excess AC capacity usually have poor air movement and uneven humidity control. Undersized units may be unable to satisfy the thermostat setting in severe weather conditions. While the occupants remain uncomfortable, the equipment is under extreme stress, which can lead to excess wear and the premature failure of critical parts.

Installing the System

Once the equipment has been selected based on capacity, the designer will engineer the air distribution system to ensure that the right amount of conditioned air is delivered to every room. For new construction, the appropriate materials are transported to the jobsite, and our field mechanics install the ductwork according to the plans and specifications. The AC installation is completed when the equipment is set and full system functionality is verified.

In retrofit applications, we remove the old AC equipment, reclaim the refrigerant and inspect the ductwork for gaps, obstructions and breeches. In older systems, duct leakage can waste as much as 20 percent of the energy the system consumes. After the equipment is set, we calibrate the system for optimal performance and remove any accumulated jobsite clutter.
